The museum was established due to the will of a group of friends passionate with fishing activities and techniques.
In 1956 they had already exhibited a collection of various sea organisms in a museum which was to be dedicated to deceased Professor Capriotti and definitely given to the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto in 1997.
The collection consists of approximately 6,000 units divided into fossils, sub-fossils, embalmed animals and a rich sea herbal. The exhibition aims at offering visitors the chance to observe how rich and different is the sea fauna on our planet. Specimen, in fact, come not only from the Adriatic or the Mediterranean sea, but also from far distant seas and prove that San Benedetto del Tronto is having a favourable period with Ocean Fishing.
Besides, the museum uses replicas of sea - beds, models of boats and impressive sea and freshwater aquariums to introduce visitors directly into the diving world.
Situated in the fish Market area, it gives an opportunity to widen one's view to the harbour and the places where activities linked to fishing, such as dockyards, hemp manufacturing, rope and net production and typical markets, are carried out. Thus it is possible to check fish equipment and techniques, places for fish storage and sale, boats and both the fish and tourist ports.
This Museum, desired by the people who are used at sea living and working, is visited each year by approximately 20,000 visitors, among whom tourists, students and famous professors, researchers and professionals working in the field.
